The Champions League is one of Europe’s elite competition and the trophy seems to have eluded Barcelona for more than five years. For the past decade, Barcelona has made claim to this trophy than any other team just behind Real Madrid who has won the competition three times back to back, making them the first team to achieve this feat.
It’s safe to say the red, blue and yellow coloured army from Catalonia envied their rival’s success and this made their messiah, Lionel Messi, promise to return the much coveted trophy back to the Camp Nou.
This promise seemed feasible when they beat Liverpool in the semi-final first leg tie, 3-0, at Camp Nou. Many had envisioned Messi and his troops in Madrid making good of this promise at their archest rival’s soil.
But this was short-lived as Liverpool had other plans for Barcelona at Anfield. Even without the presence of Salah and Firmino, Liverpool was able to fire four goals past the Barcelona goalie, with both Origi and Wjnaldum getting braces.
