The name ‘Abacha’, to every Nigerian, is synonymous to dictatorship and looting.
There is a famous quote which was allegedly made by Abacha’s wife, claiming she and her family can never be as poor as Dangote ( the richest man in Africa).
While I have no idea how true this statement is, it seems like every time money from Abacha’s loots is recovered, there always seem to be more from where it came from.
Recently, a British court seized £211M which Abacha had looted, and this had us thinking “how much exactly did this man steal?”
The real question is, if he hadn’t stolen this money, would Nigeria be better than it already is? Or could it be that someone else would have stolen it?
Well, many are happy that if this money is returned to the country’s pocket, it will go a long way in improving the standard of living. This actually gave rise to a couple of puzzling questions. Did he actually do us a favor?? Did he stack all that money away, knowing fully well that one day we would need it?? Or is he just a heartless thief, and Nigerians are now getting what is rightfully theirs??
However, what is more important is how the government will use this money if received. Will they use it constructively or just waste or steal it like those who came before them??
