Bride Price Is Modern Day Slave Trade

I know I am about to shake some serious tables, and probably offend some people. But this has been on my mind for a while now, I just have to let it out.

The concept of dowry and bride price was born out of sexism and misogyny. I used the term slave trade because it’s literally paying to own somebody. I used the term own because that’s what happened during the old times, a man sees a girl, pays for her hand in marriage not minding about her consent as long as her parents accept.

I have said it before and I will say it again, money is a means of transaction, it depicts ownership, and when used to purchase people, they become either slaves or prostitutes.

I know it’s our tradition, and so was women not being allowed to speak and have a voice, also killing people because of the order of some narcissistic king is our tradition. Our ancestors didn’t know everything, I am willing to bet that we way more wiser. so why can’t we do away with their toxic idologies?

Why do you have to pay to have someone else’s love? Love is not a commodity. it’s 2019, we should have evolved from this backward rituals, I mean, we are crying against domestic violence, and nobody is tackling the thing that gives men a sense of ownership.
